TONGUE DIAGNOSIS

 

Tongue- and pulse diagnosis are two of the most important diagnostic tools of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). They are used to determine a TCM diagnosis to treat the condition you go to the acupuncturist for.


Generally speaking, tongue diagnosis is easier to learn and less subjective than pulse diagnosis. It is less meridian specific than the pulse, but it gives a better indication of the depth and nature (heat, cold, etc.) of the imbalance, and is less influenced by short term factors such as nervousness. The tongue is also a valuable measuring instrument in observing the progression of the disease. In TCM it is believed that chronic imbalances will affect the color and shape of the tongue, as well as the color and thickness of its coating.
